TESDA and Samahang Plaridel forge partnership

Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) found a new partner in “Samahang Plaridel”, an organization of media practitioners led by veteran journalist Neal Cruz as chairman.

“Samahang Plaridel” will be one of the beneficiaries of the Arroyo administration’s Training for Work Scholarship Program (PGMA-TWSP). The scholarship grants will provide TESDA training for in-demand industries like call centers, medical transcription, computer applications, caregiving, reflexology, and welding.

Sec. Augusto Boboy Syjuco, TESDA Director General, spoke recently in one of the group’s weekly “Kapihan sa Maynila” sessions at the Manila Hotel to give an overview of TESDA programs.

Syjuco pointed out the beauty of the Ladderized Education Program (LEP), introduced in May 2006 under Executive Order 358, which allows high school graduates to progress between technical-vocational programs and college programs.

“For example, a student can earn a certificate in caregiving from TESDA, work for some time then go back to school to finish a nursing degree. That’s why we say, ‘pass by TESDA on your way to college’,” explained Syjuco.

He admonished that taking LEP is a very practical option considering the high costs of sending a child to college. As he sums it, “Tech-voc plus work experience plus college definitely equals to progress.”

Aside from BS Nursing, other programs initially offered under LEP are Agricultural Technology, Criminology, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Information and Communications Technology, Marine Transport, Mechanical Engineering, and Technical Teacher Education.

“Samahang Plaridel”, believing in TESDA’s advocacy, committed to help promote LEP, e-TESDA and PGMA-TWSP in broadsheets, radio and television.
